Why feeding posture matters: where Formi began

Feeding a baby is supposed to feel natural. Mostly, it feels like a full-time job no one prepares you for.

It’s long.
It’s repetitive.
It’s strangely athletic.
And no one warns you that your neck, back and shoulders are about to deliver some brutally honest feedback.

When I became a parent, I expected late nights, cluster feeds and a few tears (mostly mine).

I didn’t expect the pain. The hunching. The strange positions that made absolutely no sense. The “this feels wrong but I don’t know how to fix it” moments - a hundred times a day. And the weekly physio bills – ouch.

One thing was consistent: I couldn’t find the products I needed.
Not in the Google searches.
Not on Instagram.
Not in the baby classes.
Not even in the pamphlets they hand you on the way out of hospital with a “good luck”.

It felt like everyone had advice - except the people designing the products. So, I endlessly product-hacked with pillows, towels and boxes - none of which worked well or for long. And after nearly 20 years working in corporate offices where ergonomics is just a given, I kept wondering: Why aren’t we looking after new parents in what is arguably the most important job of all?

Because posture affects everything - comfort, connection, latch, recovery, especially when relaxin has softened your muscles and ligaments, making good support feel even more essential.

It was the missing piece. So we built it.

How the Formi footstool started (and why it helps)

Feeding takes about 1800 hours in the first year - the same as a full-time job. But unlike your full-time job, there’s no equipment, no onboarding, no ergonomics and definitely no OH&S.

So in those quiet, exhausted, determined early months, I began sketching the thing I wished existed - small, simple tools that actually supported my body. Something that worked. Something that felt at home in my home.

If feeding a baby is a full-time job, consider Formi your workplace ergonomics.

Designed in Australia with leading industrial designers, physiotherapists, lactation consultants and real parents who were just as fed up with feeding pain as I was, our first product became the Formi Footstool - our beginning.

Breastfeeding & bottle-feeding posture: what it really means

Feeding posture matters more than most of us realise.

It’s the moment your shoulders soften. The moment your neck stops tensing. The moment baby settles because you finally feel comfortable and supported.

Posture is the quiet foundation under every feed - breast, bottle or both. Get that foundation right, and everything else gets easier.

Ergonomic feeding support that fits your life (not the other way around)

Every chair becomes a nursing chair with Formi. Your sofa. Your dining chair. Your favourite corner chair. If you sit on it, the footstool works with it.

Made from soft-but-durable PUR foam. Waterproof. Easy to clean. Neutral enough to live in your lounge room without announcing itself.

There’s a gentle rocking base because micro-movement promotes circulation. There’s a lift that brings baby closer - because you shouldn’t have to fold yourself in half to feed. And there’s longevity - take it to your home office long after feeding ends - because good design should last longer than a season of sleepless nights.

Preventing feeding pain through better posture

Physiotherapists and postnatal health experts see the same things every day:

  • Tight necks.
  • Sore backs.
  • Strained wrists (I can attest, “Mummy’s Wrist” is real).
  • Latch issues that are actually posture issues in disguise.

The footstool helps you stay in a neutral, relaxed position - the one that reduces strain, improves comfort and keeps your body from shouting at you.

Small shifts. Big difference.

What’s next for Formi

This footstool is just the beginning.

We’ve spent three years obsessing over ergonomics, comfort and real-life design - quietly building what we wished existed when we were new parents.

Soon, we’ll be sharing more:

  • Insights from health experts
  • Research on feeding posture
  • Stories from parents using Formi in the wild
  • And new product made to support your body, your home and your version of feeding

Thank you for being here at the start of our story.

P.S. If you're experiencing feeding pain…

If you’re experiencing neck tension, shoulder pain or lower back pain during breastfeeding or bottle feeding, improving your feeding posture is one of the simplest ways to make feeding more comfortable.

But of course, if your pain persists or you’re worried about something, it’s always best to check in with a medical or postnatal health professional.
